Horsetooth Mountain Open Space, Fort Collins

Horsetooth Mountain is a mountain summit in the foothills of the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains of North America. The 7259ft peak is located in the Horsetooth Mountain Open Space, 11.2km west (bearing 265°) of downtown Fort Collins in Larimer County, Colorado, United States.
The mountain is easily distinguishable by the large rock formation on its summit known as Horsetooth Rock. The formation is a prominent landmark of the nearby city of Fort Collins and often used as a symbol of that city, appearing in the official city seal. The name comes from its distinctive appearance.
The rock was previously on the private property of the Soderburg family. In 1982, it was purchased by the county as an "open space" tax acquisition. It is now a popular destination for hikers as well as mountain bikers, with trails leading to the summit. The summit offers hikers a clear view to the southwest of Longs Peak and Mount Meeker, two rugged mountains in Rocky Mountain National Park.

  • Three of us visited in late August and had a great time hiking around. Beautiful country up there and tons of different trails to walk around on. Get far enough away from the trailhead and the only sounds you hear are the nature and your footsteps. Marvelous. We spent about 3 or so hours hiking and only scratched the surface of available trails and scenery. Crossroads between the trails are well marked, but I recommend bringing a map with you along with plenty of water to drink.
  • Went to Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado Springs. It was amazing. It has plenty of benches and sitting areas for picnics. We packed lunch and spent most of the day there. Up at the top it overlooks the town and the views are breathtaking. Best hiking experience in the area. Beautiful trails and wilderness - one of my favorite places in Fort Collins area
